Chapman is proud to announce that Ashrakat Hassan, a 2L at Washington University School of Law, is the recipient of the seventh annual Chapman and Cutler LLP Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Scholarship.
Inspiring young women to pursue their dreams of becoming a lawyer, just as she is doing, drives Ashrakat’s passion for the law. For Ashrakat, “seeing yourself in the field you dream of is only half the battle, the other half is making sure others see themselves too.” That ideal has led her to be a voice for others – from her experience as a public defender intern advocating for the rights of indigent clients, to volunteering to mentor classmates to inspire and support their visions for themselves. In addition to her law studies, Ashrakat makes time to serve her student community. She serves as President of the Black Law Students Association and Vice President of the Middle Eastern and North African Law Students Association, and is a member of the mock trial team.
The scholarship is named for the late Maynard Jackson, a public finance partner at Chapman (1982-1990), who was the first African-American Mayor of Atlanta (he was elected in 1973 and served three terms: 1974-1982, 1990-1994).
