Chapman is proud to announce that Oluwatosin “Tosin” Agunloye, a 3L at Washington University School of Law, is the recipient of the sixth annual Chapman and Cutler LLP Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Scholarship.
Tosin’s deeply personal experiences with racism in college led her to be a stalwart advocate for amplifying diverse voices. Tosin turned her trauma into action and became a dorm resident advisor to help residents feel safe during college, provide space to discuss shared experiences, and build a support network. She also participated in a circuit court judge election campaign, coordinating events to inform minority student populations of their legal rights and the importance of participating in local elections. In law school, Tosin is engaged in the community and serves in a number of student leadership positions, including Vice President of the Women of Color Law Society, a WashU Law Admissions Ambassador, and the Scholarship Committee for the Black Law Students Association, which helps remove barriers to accessing higher education for St. Louis area high school seniors.
The scholarship is named for the late Maynard Jackson, a public finance partner at Chapman (1982-1990), who was the first African-American Mayor of Atlanta (he was elected in 1973 and served three terms: 1974-1982, 1990-1994).
